“Then will you be clear from my oath, when you come to my relatives. If they don’t give her to you, you shall be clear from my oath.’”
What does Genesis 24:41 mean?
Abraham is reassuring his servant that he won't be held responsible if the mission fails through no fault of his own. The servant has been sent to find a wife for Isaac from among Abraham's distant relatives, and Abraham is essentially saying: "You're released from your promise to me if the family refuses to let the woman go with you." This is Abraham being both realistic and merciful. He knows that other people's choices are beyond his servant's control, and he doesn't want the man burdened with guilt if circumstances don't work out. It's a reminder that we can do our faithful best while still accepting that some outcomes aren't ours to force, and that's okay.
