What does Genesis 23:20 mean?
Abraham had just lost his wife Sarah and needed a proper place to bury her. Rather than simply taking land, he negotiated respectfully with the local Hittite community and purchased both the field and the cave within it. This transaction was completed formally and legally, with witnesses present, making it an official deed that couldn't be disputed later. What's touching here is that Abraham, a foreigner living among these people, was treated with such respect that they offered him the land as a gift. Yet Abraham insisted on paying the full price, honoring both the landowners and his wife's memory by doing things properly. That cave would become a family burial place for generations to come, a permanent home for Abraham's loved ones in the land God had promised him.
