What does Genesis 23:18 mean?
This verse marks the completion of Abraham's purchase of the cave of Machpelah as a burial place for his wife Sarah. The transaction was finalized publicly and officially, with witnesses present at the city gate (the ancient equivalent of a legal gathering place), which made the sale binding and legitimate in that culture. Abraham, who had lived as a foreigner in Canaan his whole life, finally owned a permanent piece of the land God had promised to him, though it was initially just a burial ground for his family.
