What does Genesis 21:9 mean?
Sarah watched Ishmael, the son born to Abraham and Hagar years earlier, laughing or playing in a way that troubled her deeply. The Hebrew word translated as "mocking" can mean joking or playing, but Sarah perceived it as contemptuous, perhaps directed at her own son Isaac or at their family's position. This moment captures a painful family fracture: Sarah had given her servant Hagar to Abraham because she was barren, but now the presence of Hagar's son felt threatening to Sarah's own place and her son's inheritance.
