“Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this servant and her son! For the son of this servant will not be heir with my son, Isaac.””
What does Genesis 21:10 mean?
Sarah speaks these hard words because she sees Ishmael (born to Abraham and the servant Hagar) playing with Isaac in a way that troubles her. She's protecting what she believes is Isaac's birthright and future security, though her language is harsh by today's standards. In that ancient world, inheritance was everything, and Sarah fears Ishmael's presence threatens her own son's place in the family and the promises God made to Abraham.
