What does Genesis 21:19 mean?
Hagar and her young son Ishmael are lost in the desert, dying of thirst, and she's terrified about what will happen to him. In her despair, she sits apart so she won't have to watch him suffer. But God hears the boy's cries and opens her eyes to see something that was already there, a well of water nearby that she'd somehow missed. The relief is immediate and real: she fills her bottle and gives Ishmael water. There's something deeply comforting here about how God works. He doesn't always perform dramatic miracles or change our circumstances from scratch. Sometimes he opens our eyes to help, resources, or possibilities that are already present but hidden from our view by fear, exhaustion, or despair. When you're in a hard season and can't see a way forward, this story reminds us that God's provision might already be closer than we realize, waiting for us to notice it.
