What does Genesis 21:18 mean?

When Hagar and her son Ishmael are dying of thirst in the wilderness, an angel appears to comfort her with this promise. God is telling Hagar to stop despairing and tend to her boy, because despite their desperate circumstances, he has a future and purpose. The phrase "hold him in your hand" suggests both physical care and God's protective grasp over the child's life. This is a tender reminder that even when we're at our lowest point, feeling abandoned or afraid for those we love, God hasn't forgotten us or the people who depend on usβ€”and sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is simply show up and care for the ones in front of us.
