Genesis 20:7
“Now therefore, restore the man’s wife. For he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live. If you don’t restore her, know for sure that you will die, you, and all who are yours.””
What does Genesis 20:7 mean?
God is warning Abimelech that he's unknowingly taken someone else's wife, and that Abraham—despite his human weakness in the situation—stands in a special relationship with God as a prophet. The point isn't that Abraham is perfectly righteous, but that God has chosen him for a particular purpose and listens to his prayers. When Abimelech returns Sarah and seeks Abraham's intercession, healing will come to his household; if he refuses, death will follow. This reflects an ancient understanding that prophets had real spiritual authority and that wronging them brought serious consequences. For us today, it's a reminder that God takes relationships seriously and that He values people He's called for His purposes, even when they stumble and make mistakes.
