What does Genesis 20:2 mean?
Abraham was living in foreign territory and grew afraid for his safety, so he asked Sarah to tell people she was his sister rather than his wife. This wasn't entirely a lie (she was his half-sister), but it was meant to deceive, and it worked in a troubling way: the king of Gerar took Sarah into his household, planning to marry her. What Abraham feared (harm coming to him) nearly happened anyway through his own dishonesty, and it put Sarah in real danger too. The story shows how fear can push us toward solutions that actually create the very problems we're trying to avoid, and how our choices affect people we care about.
