“Abraham traveled from there toward the land of the South, and lived between Kadesh and Shur. He lived as a foreigner in Gerar.”
What does Genesis 20:1 mean?
Abraham is on the move again, this time settling in the region between Kadesh and Shur, with a particular stay in Gerar. The phrase "lived as a foreigner" is important: it reminds us that even though God had promised Abraham the land of Canaan, he never actually owned it during his lifetime. He was always a resident alien, passing through and depending on the goodwill of others. This captures something true about faith itself, the sense of not being fully at home in the present while trusting God's promises about the future.
