Genesis 20:16
“To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, it is for you a covering of the eyes to all that are with you. In front of all you are vindicated.””
What does Genesis 20:16 mean?
This verse comes from an awkward moment when Abraham had pretended Sarah was his sister instead of his wife, and King Abimelech had taken her into his household. When God intervened and Abimelech discovered the deception, he returned Sarah and gave Abraham significant gifts. Abimelech's words here to Sarah acknowledge that her reputation has been questioned and potentially damaged by what happened, so he's offering this generous gift as a public statement that she's been cleared of any wrongdoing. The "covering of the eyes" means he's essentially telling everyone that this gift proves her innocence and should settle any gossip or suspicion about her character. It's his way of making a formal, material apology and restoring her honor in the eyes of their community.
