Genesis 19:9
“They said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one fellow came in to live as a foreigner, and he appoints himself a judge. Now will we deal worse with you, than with them!” They pressed hard on the man Lot, and came near to break the door.”
What does Genesis 19:9 mean?
The men of Sodom are escalating their aggression toward Lot in this moment. They're angry that this outsider (Lot was originally from elsewhere) presumes to lecture them about their behavior, and now they're turning their hostility on him instead of the visitors he tried to protect. The phrase "stand back" shows how quickly the situation is deteriorating, as the crowd physically presses against him and threatens to break down his door. What makes this passage particularly tragic is how it reveals the cost of standing against a community's moral collapse. Lot positioned himself as the lone voice of conscience, and now he's being crushed for it.
