Genesis 19:16

But he lingered; and the men grabbed his hand, his wife’s hand, and his two daughters’ hands, Yahweh being merciful to him; and they took him out, and set him outside of the city.

What does Genesis 19:16 mean?

Lot is frozen by fear and disbelief even as judgment is about to fall on Sodom, so the angels physically grab him and his family to drag them to safety. This moment shows both the seriousness of what's coming and God's stubborn mercy, pulling Lot out almost against his will because he can't seem to act on his own. Sometimes we need to be rescued from ourselves, especially when we're too numb or conflicted to make the choice that saves us. The scene reminds us that God's kindness doesn't always feel gentle in the moment, it can feel like a firm hand pulling us away from danger we're too confused or afraid to escape.
