“He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.””
What does Genesis 18:32 mean?
Abraham is making his final plea to God about Sparing Sodom and Gomorrah from destruction. Throughout this conversation, he's been negotiating downward, asking if God would spare the cities for fifty righteous people, then forty-five, then forty, thirty, twenty, and now finally ten. God agrees each time, showing remarkable patience and revealing his heart: he's willing to show mercy for even a small remnant of good people. What makes this moment tender is Abraham's hesitation. He says "Oh don't let the Lord be angry" before asking one more time, as if he knows he's pushing the boundaries of what's reasonable. Yet he keeps asking because he cares deeply about the innocent people there. God's consistent yes tells us that he values mercy and isn't looking for excuses to punish, but is genuinely hoping to find reasons to forgive and spare. Even ten faithful people would have been enough to change everything.
