Genesis 18:31
“He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.””
What does Genesis 18:31 mean?
Abraham is in the middle of a remarkable conversation with God, negotiating mercy for the city of Sodom. He's already talked God down from destroying it if fifty righteous people can be found, and now he's pushing further, asking what if only twenty are there. The beautiful thing here is that Abraham keeps going, keeps pleading, keeps believing that God's mercy might extend even further than the previous promise. God agrees again, committing not to destroy the city for the sake of twenty righteous people. What makes this exchange powerful is how it shows God willing to listen and respond to genuine intercession. Abraham isn't being disrespectful or presumptuous, but humble and persistent in his prayer. He's discovering that bringing our concerns to God, even when we feel small and uncertain, matters.
