Genesis 17:20
“As for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.”
What does Genesis 17:20 mean?
Abraham had just asked God to bless his son Ishmael, the child born to him and Sarah's servant Hagar, and God answered with a resounding yes. This promise shows that God's care isn't limited to the child of the covenant (Isaac, who would come later) but extends generously to Ishmael as well. God promises Ishmael will have a large, thriving family and become the founder of a great nation, which history shows was fulfilled through the Arab peoples. What's tender here is that God heard Abraham's heart for his firstborn son and honored that love. Even when God's primary covenant would flow through Isaac, He didn't abandon Ishmael or treat him as less worthy of blessing.
