What does Genesis 17:11 mean?
God is making a physical sign with Abraham that will mark every male descendant as belonging to God's covenant family. Circumcision was to be a visible reminder, worn on the body, of the agreement God was making: to be Abraham's God and to give his descendants the land of Canaan as their home. For ancient Israel, this wasn't just a medical practice but a sacred mark that said, "I belong to God's promise."
