Genesis 17:10
“This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you. Every male among you shall be circumcised.”
What does Genesis 17:10 mean?
God is establishing a sign of commitment between himself and Abraham's family line. Circumcision, a physical mark on male bodies, would serve as a permanent reminder and identifier of this covenant, similar to how a wedding ring signals a commitment today. This wasn't arbitrary: in the ancient Near East, circumcision was a meaningful practice, and here God uses it to say, "You are set apart as mine, and this covenant spans generations."
