Genesis 15:17
βIt came to pass that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.β
What does Genesis 15:17 mean?
When Abraham fell into a deep sleep after God promised him descendants, something extraordinary happened. As darkness fell, a smoking furnace and a flaming torch moved between the pieces of animals Abraham had arranged, a ritual gesture showing that God was making an unbreakable covenant with him. In ancient Near Eastern custom, walking between divided animals meant "may I be torn apart like these animals if I break this promise"βso God himself was pledging his faithfulness in the most solemn way possible. This was God's way of saying: I am completely committed to you, and nothing will stop me from keeping my word.
