“In the fourth generation they will come here again, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full.””
What does Genesis 15:16 mean?
God is telling Abram that his descendants won't immediately possess the land he's promised them—they'll have to wait about four hundred years. The reason isn't arbitrary: the Amorites and other peoples living there still have time to change their ways, and God is giving them space to do so rather than rushing to judgment. When that long period finally ends, their refusal to turn from wrongdoing will be complete, and then God's promised judgment and land transfer will happen. This reveals something tender about how God works: he doesn't punish hastily, even when someone deserves it. He gives real opportunity for repentance, and only when people have genuinely exhausted that grace does he act. For Abram's family, it meant a longer wait than he might have hoped, but it also meant living in a world where God was being patient and just, not capricious.
