What does Genesis 15:13 mean?
God's promise to Abram here comes with a hard truth attached: his descendants will endure centuries of slavery in a foreign land before inheriting the promise he's making. This isn't random cruelty, but part of God's larger plan, and it gives Abram something concrete to hold onto even when the future looks painful. The four hundred years (understood by many scholars as symbolic of a long period rather than a precise count) became Israel's experience in Egypt, exactly as foretold. What makes this remarkable is that God tells Abram this difficult future upfront, treating him as someone mature enough to handle the full story rather than just the good parts.
