What does Genesis 15:12 mean?
As the sun set, God put Abram into a deep, supernatural sleep, and in that state something extraordinary happened: he experienced overwhelming fear and darkness. This wasn't a nightmare or anxiety, but a profound spiritual encounter that prepared him to receive God's covenant promise about his descendants. The darkness and dread that swept over him reflect how seriously God was taking this moment, and how the weight of what was being promised (countless descendants for an aging, childless man) was genuinely overwhelming. Sometimes when God draws near to transform our lives, we feel the weight of it first, before we feel the peace of it.
