Ezra 8:31
“Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and the bandit by the way.”
What does Ezra 8:31 mean?
Ezra and the Jewish exiles were making a dangerous journey from Babylon back to Jerusalem with the temple treasures they'd been entrusted with, traveling through territory where bandits and hostile forces posed a real threat. Rather than asking the king for soldiers to protect them (which would have seemed like a lack of faith), they chose to rely on God's protection. What they're testifying to here is that despite the genuine dangers on the road, God kept them safe and brought them through to their destination. This speaks to something many of us experience: acknowledging that real threats exist while also trusting that God's presence and care are more powerful than those threats. The "hand of God" being "on us" is a way of saying God was actively watching over and guiding them.
