Ezra 5:8
“Be it known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands.”
What does Ezra 5:8 mean?
When the Jewish people returned from exile in Babylon, their Persian rulers wanted a report on what was happening in Jerusalem. This verse is part of that official update, describing how the temple reconstruction was progressing with solid materials and genuine progress. The officials are essentially saying, "This is real work by serious people, and it's actually getting done." What makes this encouraging is the phrase "prospers in their hands"—even while under foreign rule and facing opposition, the people's effort was bearing fruit. Sometimes when we're rebuilding something broken in our own lives, we need witnesses to confirm that yes, the work is real and it's moving forward. This verse reminds us that faithful effort, even when observed or questioned by others, can still succeed.
