What does Ezekiel 8:12 mean?
Ezekiel witnessed the spiritual corruption happening secretly in Jerusalem, where even the community's leaders were practicing idolatry in hidden rooms, convincing themselves that God wasn't watching. Their false belief that God had abandoned them became an excuse for their unfaithfulness, as if they could hide their hearts from him. This passage speaks to how we sometimes compartmentalize our lives, doing one thing in public while something entirely different happens behind closed doors, often with the rationalization that no one (including God) is paying attention. The deeper pain here is that their sense of God's absence wasn't based on reality but on their own spiritual choices—they had turned away first, then invented a story about being forsaken to justify continuing down that path.
