Ezekiel 44:25
““‘“They shall go in to no dead person to defile themselves; but for father, or for mother, or for son, or for daughter, for brother, or for sister who has had no husband, they may defile themselves.”
What does Ezekiel 44:25 mean?
God is setting boundaries for the priests about ritual purity in the restored temple. In ancient Israel, touching a dead body created ritual impurity that required cleansing before entering God's sanctuary, but priests had special responsibilities to serve in the temple regularly. Rather than forbidding all contact with death, God allows priests to grieve and care for their closest family members, even though this temporarily makes them ceremonially unclean. The exception for unmarried sisters shows God's concern for vulnerable family members who had no husband to care for them. This passage teaches that holiness doesn't mean complete separation from human need and grief, but rather using wisdom about what truly matters, honoring both our duty to God and our love for those closest to us.
