Ezekiel 36:22
““Therefore tell the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “I don’t do this for your sake, house of Israel, but for my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went.”
What does Ezekiel 36:22 mean?
God is speaking to the Israelites during their exile, when their faithlessness has damaged His reputation among the surrounding peoples. He's saying that His restoration of them won't happen because they deserve it or have earned forgiveness, but because His own honor is at stake. When God's people live in ways that contradict His character, it misleads others about who He actually is. This is both humbling and liberating: humbling because it means God isn't motivated by our worthiness, but liberating because it means His commitment to restore us doesn't depend on us getting ourselves together first. His name, His character, His truthfulness in the world—these matter more to Him than our shame deserves. In this moment of exile and despair, God is essentially saying, "I'm going to act, and when I do, everyone will know it's about who I am, not who you've been."
