Ezekiel 35:4
“I will lay your cities waste, and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.”
What does Ezekiel 35:4 mean?
Ezekiel was speaking a hard word to the Edomites, Israel's long-time enemies who had rejoiced when Jerusalem fell and even helped plunder it. God's judgment here isn't arbitrary cruelty, but a consequence of their choices and their treatment of his people. The promise that they would "know that I am Yahweh" points to something deeper than punishment alone: it's God saying that through these events, they would recognize his reality and authority, whether that recognition brought repentance or simply inescapable truth. For those of us reading this today, it can speak to how God uses difficult circumstances to open our eyes. Sometimes what feels like devastation becomes the place where we finally see things clearly, where we understand that God is real and his character matters. It's not comfortable knowledge, but it's true knowledge, and it can redirect everything that comes after.
