Ezekiel 3:14
“So the Spirit lifted me up, and took me away; and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; and Yahweh’s hand was strong on me.”
What does Ezekiel 3:14 mean?
Ezekiel had just received a difficult calling to speak God's words to a people who wouldn't listen, and this verse captures his raw, honest response. The Spirit physically carries him away, but notice that he goes "in bitterness"—he's not joyful or peaceful about this assignment, and the text doesn't ask him to be. Even as God's hand rests heavily on him, empowering him for the task ahead, Ezekiel is wrestling with genuine frustration and emotional heat about what's being asked of him. There's something deeply human and hopeful here: you can feel called by God and experience His presence while also feeling angry, reluctant, or exhausted about your circumstances. God doesn't require you to feel happy about hard callings to be faithful to them. The "strong hand" of the Lord is described alongside bitterness, not instead of it, suggesting that divine strength and human struggle can exist together.
