What does Ezekiel 29:6 mean?
Egypt had been a tempting ally for Israel, someone the nation turned to when trouble came. But a reed staff sounds sturdy until you actually lean on it, then it splinters and cuts your hand, which is exactly what happened when Israel trusted Egypt for military help instead of trusting God. Through the prophet Ezekiel, God is saying that Egypt's weakness and unreliability will become undeniably clear to everyone, and in that moment of collapse, people will understand that God alone is trustworthy and in control. The real point isn't punishment for its own sake, but a lesson for all people: when we finally see that our false sources of security are hollow, we're positioned to recognize the one source that never fails.
