Ezekiel 28:2
““Son of man, tell the prince of Tyre, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Because your heart is lifted up, and you have said, ‘I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the middle of the seas;’ yet you are man, and not God, though you set your heart as the heart of God—”
What does Ezekiel 28:2 mean?
Ezekiel is delivering a hard message to the ruler of Tyre, a wealthy coastal city that had grown so powerful and prosperous it began to see itself as divine. The prince had convinced himself he was untouchable, even god-like, because of his success and status. God's response cuts straight through that delusion: you are human, not God, no matter what you believe about yourself. There's deep truth here for anyone whose pride has grown unchecked. When we achieve success, gain influence, or accumulate wealth, it's easy to start believing our own press, to forget our limits, or to think we're beyond accountability. God's gentle but firm correction reminds us that being human means remaining human, with all the vulnerability and dependence that comes with it. Even at our best, we need God far more than we need to believe we're gods ourselves.
