What does Ezekiel 22:21 mean?
God is using the image of a metalworker refining ore to describe His judgment on Jerusalem. When metal is heated in a furnace, impurities are burned away and the material is melted down so it can be reformed, and that's what God is saying He'll do to His people—not to destroy them permanently, but to purify them through a severe and unavoidable process. The "fire of wrath" feels terrifying in the moment, yet the purpose behind it is restoration, not annihilation. This kind of language appears throughout the prophets when God confronts His people about corruption and injustice, warning them that refusing to turn around will result in painful but ultimately redemptive consequences.
