Ezekiel 20:8
““‘“But they rebelled against me, and would not listen to me. They didn’t all throw away the abominations of their eyes. They also didn’t forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the middle of the land of Egypt.”
What does Ezekiel 20:8 mean?
God is describing a painful moment in Israel's early history, right after leading them out of slavery. Even though He had just freed them from Egypt with miraculous signs, the people immediately turned back to the very gods and practices they'd known there, refusing to listen when God called them to something better. The phrase about "abominations of their eyes" means they couldn't stop looking at and desiring the false gods around them, and their hearts followed their gaze. God's response wasn't arbitrary anger, but the natural consequence of broken trust: when people reject the one who saved them and return to what enslaved them, they experience the weight of that choice. This passage speaks to how hard it is for us to truly leave behind the things that have held us captive, and how that resistance to God's better way always has consequences.
