What does Ezekiel 20:26 mean?
This is one of the hardest verses in Scripture, and it's worth sitting with the difficulty rather than rushing past it. Ezekiel is describing God's judgment on Israel for their practice of child sacrifice, which was deeply forbidden in God's law. The passage uses jarring language to convey something almost unbearable: God allowed the people to fall into practices so abominable that they would be destroyed by their own choices, so they would finally recognize the seriousness of turning away from him. The "gifts" mentioned refers to children—the most precious thing a family could have. When people reject God's clear commands and adopt the pagan practices of surrounding nations instead, they end up harming what matters most to them. God didn't cause the sacrifice itself, but he allowed the consequences of Israel's rebellion to unfold so thoroughly that they couldn't miss the message: abandoning God leads to devastation.
