“I looked, and behold, a stormy wind came out of the north: a great cloud, with flashing lightning, and a brightness around it, and out of the middle of it as it were glowing metal, out of the middle of the fire.”
What does Ezekiel 1:4 mean?
Ezekiel opens his prophecy with a vision so overwhelming that he has to describe it through layers of natural imagery: wind, clouds, lightning, and fire all converging at once. He's trying to put words to something that breaks language, an encounter with the divine that's simultaneously terrifying and magnetic. The storm coming from the north may have carried political weight for his original audience (invaders came from that direction), but more fundamentally, Ezekiel is saying that God's presence arrives with the force of nature itself, impossible to ignore or control.
