“Yahweh did so; and there came grievous swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’ houses: and in all the land of Egypt the land was corrupted by reason of the swarms of flies.”
What does Exodus 8:24 mean?
This plague of flies marks a turning point in Egypt's suffering, where the destruction moves into Pharaoh's own home and the homes of his officials. Up until this moment, the plagues had affected the land and people, but now the discomfort becomes personal and inescapable for the ruling class. The word "corrupted" suggests the land itself was being ruined, infested to the point of becoming almost unusable. What made this plague distinctive wasn't just the flies themselves, but that they invaded everywhere at once, making it impossible for anyone, no matter their power or position, to escape the consequences of refusing to let God's people go.
