What does Exodus 7:13 mean?
When Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, the text tells us his heart "was hardened"—meaning he became more stubborn and resistant, less willing to hear Moses and Aaron's message. This hardening happened repeatedly throughout the plagues, each time Pharaoh facing consequences but choosing to dig in further rather than give in. The phrase "as Yahweh had spoken" reminds us that God had already told Moses this would happen, that Pharaoh's resistance was foreknown, not a surprise to the Lord. Whether we understand this as Pharaoh hardening his own heart through repeated choices or God allowing his natural stubbornness to harden further, the point is clear: persistent refusal to listen makes us more resistant to change, not less.
