What does Exodus 6:9 mean?
When Moses comes to the enslaved Israelites with news that God will free them, they can't hear him. Their suffering is so overwhelming—their spirits so crushed by the brutality of slavery—that hope itself feels impossible. Sometimes pain closes our ears to anything good, even words meant to comfort us. This moment captures something deeply human: when we're in the depths of despair, our capacity to receive help shrinks. The Israelites weren't rejecting Moses out of stubbornness; they were too exhausted and traumatized to imagine a different future. God doesn't fault them for this, but instead works through their inability to listen by leading them toward freedom anyway.
