Exodus 40:4
“You shall bring in the table, and set in order the things that are on it. You shall bring in the lamp stand, and light its lamps.”
What does Exodus 40:4 mean?
This instruction comes near the end of the Exodus story, when Moses is setting up the tabernacle, the portable place of worship in the desert. The "table" held the bread of the presence, a kind of offering that symbolized God's constant provision, while the lampstand gave light in the holy space. Both of these actions—arranging the table and lighting the lamps—were acts of preparation and care, making the sanctuary ready and welcoming. In a deeper sense, they remind us that worship involves both the practical work of showing up and the intentional act of letting God's presence illuminate our lives.
