What does Exodus 4:20 mean?
Moses is gathering his family and heading back to Egypt after decades in exile, carrying with him the simple staff that God had just transformed into a snake and back again. That staff represents God's presence and power going with him into an impossible task. The detail about his wife and sons shows he's not going alone into danger, but he's also not letting family concerns keep him from obeying God's call. There's something both ordinary and profound here: a man on a donkey with his loved ones, armed only with a walking stick, yet equipped with God's word to face down Pharaoh himself.
