What does Exodus 37:9 mean?
These golden cherubim sat on top of the ark of the covenant, Israel's most sacred object, facing each other with wings stretched protectively overhead. Their posture created a kind of sacred space, a throne where God's presence was understood to dwell among his people. The mercy seat (also called the atonement cover) was where the high priest would sprinkle blood on the Day of Atonement, seeking forgiveness for the nation's sins. The cherubim's attention turned toward that mercy seat suggests something beautiful: they themselves were focused on the place where God's justice and mercy met, where broken relationships could be restored.
