Exodus 37:8
“one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other end. He made the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at its two ends.”
What does Exodus 37:8 mean?
The mercy seat (or atonement cover) was the gold lid placed on top of the Ark of the Covenant, and these two cherubim were hammered out from the same piece of gold, their wings stretched over the seat. In the Old Testament, this was the most sacred object in Israel's worship space, believed to be where God's presence dwelt and where forgiveness was offered on behalf of the people. The cherubim weren't there as decoration, but as witnesses and guardians of this holy place where heaven and earth met. This detail about them being made as one unified piece with the mercy seat itself shows how carefully and purposefully everything in God's worship space was constructed, nothing haphazard or separated, all of it pointing to the unity of God's design and the centrality of forgiveness in relating to him.
