Exodus 34:19
““All that opens the womb is mine; and all your livestock that is male, the firstborn of cow and sheep.”
What does Exodus 34:19 mean?
When God says this to Moses, he's reminding the Israelites of a covenant promise made long before. In ancient cultures, the firstborn of both people and animals were considered especially significant, often set apart for special purposes or belonging to God. Here, God is claiming the firstborn as his own, acknowledging his sovereignty over life itself and establishing that these firstborns should be dedicated back to him through specific rituals and offerings. This wasn't meant to be burdensome but rather a way of keeping the people conscious of God's generosity and their dependence on him.
