What does Exodus 34:17 mean?

God is telling the Israelites not to make carved or molded images to worship. This command comes after they'd already broken His law by creating the golden calf while Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, so it's a direct correction of that painful failure. The instruction acknowledges a real human temptation: we want something visible and tangible to focus our worship on, but God says that habit leads us away from genuine faith. Whether we're drawn to physical objects, status symbols, or anything else we elevate above our relationship with Him, the principle remains the same: worshipping created things instead of the Creator always falls short.
