What does Exodus 33:6 mean?
After Moses came down from Mount Horeb with the Ten Commandments, he found the people had made a golden calf to worship while he was gone. This verse describes what happened next: the Israelites removed their ornaments and jewelry as a sign of repentance and grief over their unfaithfulness. It was a visible, physical way of turning away from what they'd done wrong and expressing sorrow for breaking trust with God. This act of removing their finery stripped away their pride and self-decoration, much like taking off a costume to reveal what's underneath. It reminds us that genuine repentance sometimes calls us to humble ourselves publicly and let go of the things we use to impress others or feel secure. The people were saying through their actions: we are sorry, and we're willing to change.
