“It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;”
What does Exodus 33:22 mean?
When Moses asks to see God's face, God responds with this promise instead. God says he'll tuck Moses into a rocky crevice and shield him with his own hand while his glory passes by, then remove his hand so Moses can see God's back as he departs. It's a beautiful image of protection and limitation working together, since Moses couldn't survive the full force of God's presence but could experience something real and genuine within those boundaries. This speaks to how God sometimes says no to our requests in order to say yes to keeping us safe. We might long for more of God than we can actually handle in our current state, and rather than pretending that's not true, God meets us with both tenderness and honesty. He doesn't dismiss Moses' desire to know him, but he does protect him from what would overwhelm or destroy him.
