Exodus 33:20
“He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.””
What does Exodus 33:20 mean?
God is telling Moses something profound about the nature of divine holiness: humans aren't made to withstand the full, unveiled presence of God's glory. It's not that God is cruel or hiding, but that encountering God's complete essence would overwhelm and destroy human life as we know it, the way looking directly at the sun would damage our eyes. This explains why throughout Scripture, when people do encounter God directly, they often fall in terror or need preparation. Yet even in this limitation, God offers Moses something precious: he'll see God's "back" and experience his goodness passing by, a real relationship within what humans can bear.
