Exodus 32:23
“For they said to me, ‘Make us gods, which shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’”
What does Exodus 32:23 mean?
Aaron is defending himself to Moses by explaining what the people demanded of him while Moses was up on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. The Israelites were afraid and impatient, unsure if Moses would return, and they asked Aaron to create a god they could see and touch right now. What's striking here is that the people weren't trying to abandon their faith entirely, they were trying to fill a void left by uncertainty and fear. It's a reminder that desperation can drive us toward shortcuts and false comfort, especially when we're confused or scared about what God is doing. Aaron's excuse also shows how easy it can be to go along with pressure from a group, even when we sense something isn't right.
