What does Exodus 32:18 mean?
Moses is descending from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments when he hears commotion in the camp below. His assistant Joshua first thinks it's the sound of battle, but Moses corrects him: what they're hearing isn't the shouting of war or defeat, but something else entirely. It's the sound of singing and celebration, which turns out to be the Israelites worshiping a golden calf they've made while Moses was away. This moment captures something painfully human: we can mistake what's really happening when we don't have the full picture. Joshua hears noise and assumes the worst, while Moses recognizes it as something different altogether. Sometimes what sounds chaotic from a distance reveals itself to be something else entirely when we get closer.
