What does Exodus 32:17 mean?
Joshua hears commotion from the Israelite camp and assumes the worst, thinking they're under attack. Moses, who has been on Mount Sinai receiving God's law, hasn't yet returned to see what's actually happening: his brother Aaron has allowed the people to make and worship a golden calf while growing anxious about Moses' long absence. This moment captures how easily fear can make us jump to conclusions when we're missing crucial information. Joshua's mistake is understandable, even natural, but it reminds us that our first instinct during chaos isn't always accurate.
